The film opens with Joseph Smith (played by Brandon Ray Olive), founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, imprisoned for treason and awaiting trial. His cellmates include Porter Rockwell (Corbin Allred), a notorious gunman; Alexander McRae (Casey Elliott), a fiery abolitionist; and Caleb Baldwin (Adam Johnson), an innocent man caught up in the legal system.
The tension is palpable from the start as we witness the harsh conditions inside Liberty Jail. The men sleep on straw mats in cramped quarters, with little food or water. He uses slow-motion shots to convey Baldwin’s sense of isolation as he stares out at a vast landscape beyond his cell window.
And he draws outstanding performances from his cast, particularly Allred as Rockwell. In one unforgettable scene, Rockwell recounts how he killed two men who threatened his friend Smith – a moment that showcases both Allred’s magnetic charisma and Rockwell’s complex blend of loyalty and violence.
