Set in a world where entire cities roam the earth on gargantuan wheels, swallowing up smaller towns for resources and power, “Mortal Engines” follows the journey of Hester Shaw (played brilliantly by Hera Hilmar), a fierce and determined outcast seeking revenge against Thaddeus Valentine (the delightfully dastardly Hugo Weaving). Alongside her unlikely ally Tom Natsworthy (Robert Sheehan), Hester must navigate treacherous politics, bloodthirsty villains, and her own demons in order to save the world from destruction.
From its sweeping landscapes to its intricate machinery, “Mortal Engines” is a visual feast. Director Christian Rivers brings Peter Jackson’s stunning vision to life with a keen eye for detail and an understanding of just how grandiose this story truly is. Every cog and rusted pipe pops with life thanks to the impeccable work of production designer Dan Hennah and set decorator Bob Buck.
But what truly elevates “Mortal Engines” are its performances. Hilmar shines as Hester, imbuing every moment with raw emotion and strength. Sheehan’s Tom serves as the perfect foil to her hardened exterior, his charming naivete tempered by moments of true heroism. And it goes without saying that Weaving steals every scene he’s in as the charismatic yet malevolent Valentine.
While some critics have bemoaned certain aspects of the film’s pacing or plot development, I cannot help but disagree. “Mortal Engines” is a whirlwind of action and heart that never lets up, hurtling towards its stunning conclusion with breakneck speed.
Some may argue that the film lacks depth or nuance, but I argue that its simplicity is part of its charm. “Mortal Engines” is a rollicking adventure that doesn’t take itself too seriously, all while maintaining a sense of gravitas and purpose.
Perhaps my favorite aspect of the film is the way it grapples with ideas of imperialism and colonialism. As cities tear across the landscape, consuming everything in their wake, we cannot help but see echoes of our own history and current events. The film never shies away from these themes, but rather confronts them head-on with an unflinching gaze.
Of course, no discussion of “Mortal Engines” would be complete without mentioning its stunning score by Tom Holkenborg (aka Junkie XL). From the epic opening theme to the haunting melodies that underscore Hester’s journey, every note is a triumph.
I cannot recommend “Mortal Engines” enough to those seeking a thrilling ride through a world unlike any other. With stellar performances, breathtaking visuals, and an unrelenting sense of adventure, it is truly one for the ages. As Hester Shaw herself says: “This won’t be easy. But it will be worth it.”
