Madame: A Hemingwayesque Take on a Modern Classic
As someone who’s always been drawn to the complexities of human relationships, I was immediately intrigued when I heard about “Madame,” the 2017 movie by French director Amanda Sthers. The film tells the story of Anne and Bob, an American couple living in Paris who host a fancy dinner party for their wealthy friends. When one of their guests cancels, Anne decides to invite her maid Maria to fill in, sparking a chain of events that will test their relationships and reveal hidden desires.
I have to admit that at first glance, this plot seemed like it could be just another romantic comedy with a French twist. But as someone who appreciates Ernest Hemingway’s style of understated yet powerful storytelling, I sensed there might be more to this movie than meets the eye.
As it turns out, my intuition was spot on. “Madame” delves deep into themes including class, identity, love and desire with such subtlety and nuance that it leaves you pondering its implications long after the credits roll.
Let’s start with the cast. The ensemble is led by Toni Collette and Harvey Keitel as Anne and Bob – two characters whose seemingly perfect lives are thrown into disarray when they’re confronted with their own mortality (not to mention their own infidelities). While there are plenty of quotable lines in “Madame” (including my personal favorite, when Maria tells Anne, “I don’t want to be your friend, I want to be your maid”), it’s the visual language of the film that truly stands out. From the sumptuous backgrounds of Paris to the intimate close-ups that highlight every quiver and twist in the characters’ faces, this movie is a masterclass in how to use cinema to convey emotion without relying on dialogue.
And yet, even as “Madame” dazzles with its visuals and performances, it also carries some serious social commentary. The class divide between Anne and Bob’s wealthy friends and Maria is just one example of how privilege permeates every interaction on screen – reminding us that even in 21st century Paris, not everyone gets a seat at the table.
Of course, some viewers may find fault with certain aspects of “Madame.” There are moments when the pacing seems sluggish or when certain plot twists feel contrived. But overall, this movie offers a fresh take on familiar themes and delivers them with style and grace.
It’s no wonder then that “Madame” has received critical acclaim both at home in France and abroad. Many have praised its ingenious script and remarkable performances – earning nods for Best Actress at the Lumiere Awards for Toni Collette’s gutsy portrayal of Anne.

With Hemingway-esque understatement and laser-sharp focus on character relationships, this is a movie that will stick with you long after you leave the theater.
