As the sun sets on the gritty streets of post-war Tokyo, a lone figure stumbles through the alleyways, a ragged shadow of his former self. This is Matsunaga, the Drunken Angel, played by an unforgettable Toshiro Mifune in Akira Kurosawa’s 1948 masterpiece of cinema.
The film opens with Matsunaga stumbling out of a bar, his body racked with tuberculosis and his soul weighed down by years of living on the margins of society. He is confronted by a young gangster named Okada (played by Reisaburo Yamamoto), who has just been released from prison after serving time for stabbing someone in a fight over a girl.
Okada sees in Matsunaga a kindred spirit – both men are outcasts, struggling to survive in a world that seems bent on crushing them at every turn. The two form an uneasy alliance, as Okada tries to ingratiate himself with Matsunaga by bringing him medicine and clean clothes.
But despite Okada’s efforts, Matsunaga remains as stubborn as ever – he refuses to seek medical help for his tuberculosis and instead drowns his sorrows in sake and cheap women.
